Volkswagen Gol is Now The World's Best Selling Car, Not Maruthi ALto

Maruti Alto, which was the iconic model of country’s largest car maker, now stands 2nd after Volkswagen Gol laddered its way to the top as the best selling car in the world during the year 2012. Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) have delivered 286,833 units of Alto in India, whereas Volkswagen sold 293,293 models of Gol in Brazil, which is one of the most developing auto markets for auto makers. Fiat Uno was titled the third position with 255,838 units sold during the period.

The reason cited for sales short stated the hike in petrol prices, which impacted hard on the sentiments of buyers. Reportedly, the petrol price hike led to a fall of around 8 per cent in Maruti Alto sales during the last calendar year, which came as a treat to German auto maker’s Gol.

Maruti Alto is undoubtedly the best selling car model in India and has no close competitors as of now. Interestingly, in the global arena, the car maker is counted among the top selling auto brands. Since 2010, Alto has been reckoned as the largest selling car across the globe

Volkswagen Gol is Brazil’s bestseller from the last 18 years, while Maruti Suzuki’s 800 and Alto models have ruled the small car segment of the Indian auto industry since their launch. Both the models have performed brilliantly well in their markets, India and Brazil, which made their manufacturers capture the top notch positions in the same.
